The Department of Music at the Faculty of Education provides education to future university music teachers at all levels of education, thus significantly contributing to satisfying the need for qualified teaching staff in both general and music education.
Graduates of the Department of Music are actively involved in wider musical and cultural events all over Slovenia as musicians in various fields of music and as organisers of cultural life. The Department of Music is also recognisable outside the faculty environment, as students are actively involved in various cultural events. The artistic potential of our students co-shapes constructively the musical and cultural activity in Slovenia.
Students are guided through the education process by eminent professionals who are established artists and scientists in their field, with excellent domestic and international credentials. The teachers of the Department of Music are involved in important projects and activities at the national and international levels, while some of them boast high-profile Slovenian and foreign recognitions and awards.
In addition to the rich pedagogical and educational activities, the department is also known for prominent artistic activity, namely in the form of concerts and performances by both students and professors and performance of teachers of composition’ musical works. The department collaborates with various cultural organisations, performers, organisers, including, for instance, the Institute for Composition and Electroacoustics of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the Public Fund for Cultural Activities, and others.
Students of the Department of Music are educated using a special didactic approach to music lessons; they are introduced into the techniques of composition, receive training in playing various instruments, study the history of music and develop singing skills. At the same time, they learn about the basics of choral conducting and as choir singers and choirmasters also prove themselves at annual public productions. Under the close mentorship of teachers, students perform as solo musicians or form various chamber music ensembles. They gain the experience of group music playing by taking part in a mixed choir and small vocal groups.
Study at the Department of Music allows students to acquire diverse knowledge, skills and experience. For generations of graduates, studying at the Department of Music was an important stepping stone to their further career both in education and art field.
